„The boat, first found in Stockholm and seen again at Documenta, was transformed by Thek and his friends into a green bower at Lucerne. Fresh flowers made the boat an island, thus merging images of the seafarer’s journey with the land of his search. In the leafy baldachino, a cup overflowing with water, moistened a manger of moss. A bird’s nest with a blue egg was tucked into the canopy of trees. The nest and manger suggest birth, the water renewal, and the egg rebirth. The form of the boat and the elements within it read simultaneously as an island, a cradle, and an abstraction of the biblical Ark. By this layering of symbols and meaning, the nativity is linked to deliverance, baptism, and resurrection. The theme of deliverance with the Ark carries was repeated in the smallest elements of the Lucerne environment. A toy boat was moored at a tiny island-the mythical island which means shelter at the end of a voyage." (Philadelphia, 1977) Foto: For the work of art © The Estate of George Paul Thek, New York.
