After having passed the bridge visitors came to the area of the so-called "Station of the Cross" (Franke, 1993). In the center was a fireplace with stones which was being guarded by a monkey. Thek refers to this place in a letter to Jean-Christophe Ammann three years after the exhibition: "I think often of that beautiful long long bridge over the sand, and the monkey sitting under the earth light waiting for that fire to start" (May 17, 1976). The place was surrounded by benches, the walls covered with thirteen oval mirrors with wooden crosses hung at eye-level. The visitors could look at themselves in the mirrors of this station of the cross. It was the first time Thek had used oriental rugs. For the artist these rugs were symbols of a universal order imposed on chaos, whereas the fire symbolised mental activity (Philadelphia, 1977).
